The latest edition of the MHP Polarisation Tracker is now available to download.

Produced in partnership with Cambridge University’s Political Psychology Lab, the long-running social attitudes study has established itself as a key resource for people who want to understand the nature of division, distrust and reputational risk in Britain.

When people become polarised, they are less likely to listen to alternative viewpoints, and more likely to punish the other side. Misinformation is spread more easily, and activism grows. Understanding polarisation is critical to effective communication.

In this report, we examine Reform’s surge in national polls and revisit immigration, the last wave’s most polarising topic, to understand its role in shaping support for Reform. We also explore Israel / Palestine – currently Britain’s most divisive topic.

Five key takeaways from this report include:

  1. Nativist politics and systemic distrust are driving Reform’s surge
  2. Distrust in the British system has created a new political battleground, where the Greens and Reform are winning
  3. Support for immigration is increasingly polarising between left and right
  4. Public support for diversity, equality and inclusion remains strong
  5. The majority believe funding incentives pose a threat to scientific integrity
