The global security environment is undergoing significant changes. While NATO’s spending is set to rise, it’s unclear how these funds will be allocated, which projects and technologies will be prioritised, and whether public opinion will influence these decisions.

Against this backdrop, MHP collaborated with Cambridge University to conduct a nationally representative survey exploring British public attitudes towards defence, security, and the UK’s strategic alliances.

The stakes are high, with Sir Keir Starmer pledging to allocate 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2027, ahead of the previous government’s timeline, and a detailed Defence Investment Plan expected this Autumn.

UK-based companies in the sector are poised to benefit significantly, with the FTSE All-Share Aerospace and Defense index increasing by over 60 per cent this year. Overseas OEMs are also likely to enhance their UK operations due to the skills available and government incentives. Indeed, the defence industry contributes an estimated £10 billion to £12 billion a year to the UK economy. However, with public finances under strain, demonstrating strategic impact remains crucial.

As we enter this new phase of defence spending and strategic shifts, sustaining public support will be key to the long-term viability of these investments.
