Robert Jenrick, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, addressed a private MHP breakfast audience last week, focusing comments on the UK economic outlook, pressures on public services, tensions in the US-European transatlantic alliance, and the rise of Reform.
Hot on the heels of prominent Tory shadow minister Danny Kruger’s defection to Reform, he also provided keen and insightful analysis of the current challenges and potential future paths facing the Conservative Party.
- On the economy, Jenrick attacked the impact of Labour’s “unsustainable” public spending, high taxation and recent new employment regulation, criticising Chancellor Rachel Reeves for exacerbating a “doom loop” of low investment and low growth.
- On public services, he underlined the need for meaningful reform of immigration and welfare, stressing the need to redefine the UK’s international treaty obligations to allow government to meet pressures on communities and the public finances.
- On foreign policy, he acknowledged the need for Britain to be realistic about its ability to project force in the world, especially in the context of US prioritisation of China and calls for Europe to do more to boost defence capability.
On Reform, Jenrick emphasised the need for Conservatives to take surging support for Nigel Farage seriously. He focused his renewal strategy on:
- Connecting the public to a policy vision for re-energising the party to position the Conservatives as legitimate opponents, able to be trusted again.
- Engaging in a more direct way, embracing the immediacy both of issues and impactful communication which social media can catalyse.
- Reorientating the party back to the proper needs of business, with a clear and compelling vision to restore corporate and consumer confidence.
In a week dominated again by huge turbulence in UK politics and around the world, Jenrick’s front-footedness suggests he sees himself as a leading voice able to navigate the challenges of party and country at a critical time. His leadership could yet be the lifeline his party reaches for if polling fortunes continue to flatline.
